It’s common knowledge at this point that Robert Englund wasn’t the first choice to play Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Actor David Warner was cast in the role, and it was only after he dropped out that Englund stepped in. But what did that original character design look like?

Bloody Disgusting got its mittens on a handful of vintage behind-the-scenes photos that show how different Freddy’s makeup almost looked, exclusively sharing them straight out of the pages of Thommy Hutson’s incredibly comprehensive book Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.

Artist David B. Miller is the man who designed the Freddy makeup we all know and love, but before cameras rolled, he tested out a batch of different concepts on David Warner. Originally, Freddy was going to look a bit older, but the makeup changed when Robert Englund came on board.

The final design for Freddy that went through, and this is a true story, is pepperoni pizza,” Miller notes in the book, revealing the main inspiration behind his finished masterpiece.

Check out the test concepts below, and head over to Bloody Disgusting to see another rare photo!
