It’s that time of year. Time to start watching Tim Burton’s Batman Returns with Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Michelle Pfeiffer on repeat. And why wouldn’t you? It’s not only the best Batman movie – but a pitch-perfect Christmas movie!

From its amazing production design to Danny Elfman’s classic score, Batman Returns is all a moviegoer needs this time of year. Well, this and Die Hard.

And Home Alone.

Obviously.

For more reasons Batman Returns kicks all the ass, make sure to read our very own Josh Millican’s super in-depth retrospective right over HERE.

The movie centers on the monstrous Penguin (DeVito) joining forces with wicked businessman Max Shreck (Walken) to kill the Batman (Keaton). But when Shreck’s timid assistant, Selina Kyle (Pfeiffer), finds out, and Shreck tries to kill her, she is transformed into the Catwoman. She teams up with the Penguin and Shreck to destroy Batman, but sparks fly when she confronts the caped crusader.

Christopher Walken co-stars along with Michael Gough, Pat Hingle, Michael Murphy, Vincent Schiavelli, Andrew Bryniarski, Paul Reubens, and Diane Salinger.

Burton originally did not want to direct another Batman film but agreed to return after Warner Bros. granted him creative control. Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman but was replaced with Pfeiffer after she became pregnant.

Burton also produced the sequel with Denise Di Novi.

The film sports an 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Director Tim Burton’s dark, brooding atmosphere, Michael Keaton’s work as the tormented hero, and the flawless casting of Danny DeVito as The Penguin and Christopher Walken as, well, Christopher Walken make the sequel better than the first.

Batman Returns grossed $282.8M worldwide on a budget of $80M. It was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup.
