DC’s The Devil’s Muse: Artist Spotlight – Einar Baldvin

Another week, another entry in our artist spotlight series The Devil’s Muse!

This week, we want to highlight Los Angeles-by-way-of-Iceland artist Einar Baldvin, whose work is a fantastic mixture of scratches, splotches, harsh lines and folklore-ish illustrations that make brilliant use of negative space as well as evoking a strange air of folklore mystery. I also think it’s fair to say that his art calls to mind the works of Ralph Steadman, Ralph Bakshi, Frank Frazetta, and Gerald Scarfe, which I hope will be taken as high praise!

Below, we have information about Einar, how to follow him, and, of course, a large gallery of his work that he provided to Dread Central.

Additionally, Einar is raising funds on Kickstarter
for The Crawling King, a new dark fantasy novel that will be published by Starburns Industries, the studio behind the Oscar nominated film Anomalisa and the animated hit show “Rick and Morty”. Each and every page is completely done by hand and then purposefully burnt, dirtied, damaged, torn, and more in order to create an authentic presentation. They are then photographed against black velvet so as to be consistent throughout the book itself. Many of the images below are samples from The Crawling King so as to give you an idea of what you’ll support if you pledge yourself to the Kickstarter.

Lastly, also below is Einar’s short film The Pride of Strathmoor, which premiered at the 2014 Telluride Film Festival and went on to play at dozens of other film festivals and winning multiple awards along the way!

Einar’s bio:
Einar Baldvin is an award-winning animation director from Iceland who lives and works in Los Angeles. Known for making terrifying, hand-crafted films, his work has been exhibited all around the world to much acclaim. Einar is the co-founder of GLAS Animation Festival and the creator of the upcoming dark fantasy novel ‘The Crawling King’.
