Disasters Will Go to War in Earthquake vs. Tsunami

If slashers and monsters can have their own “versus” movies, then why can’t natural disasters duke it out? Finally, at long last, we will get the answer to the burning question as to who would win in a battle between an earthquake and a tsunami. In this case the tagline of “whoever wins, we lose” will truly be apropos like never before.
Disaster Wars: Earthquake vs. Tsunami is an epic piece of low budget filmmaking currently in pre-production at TomCat Films, the production company behind Aliens vs. Avatars and the upcoming Jurassic Shark.
Deep underwater in the Marianas Trench an accident results in a devastating Tsunami that destroys the Hawaiian Islands as it continues toward the West Coast. Panic ensues all up and down the western coast of North and South America. In an attempt to lessen its impact, scientists launch an underwater explosion that inadvertently makes the tsunami more powerful and focused on Los Angeles. Scientists rush to a solution while the military begins planning for the worst. Los Angeles begins emergency evacuation. Lives and loves are lost even as a brash young grad student comes up with a solution: start the mother of all earthquakes to counter the rushing torrent and raise the continental shelf off the coast of the United States.
Ah, so the solution to a titanic tsunami is to trigger a cataclysmic earthquake? I like that idea. Reminds me of that Mark Dacascos disaster flick Solar Attack, in which the solution to preventing solar flares from incinerating Earth’s atmosphere was to nuke the North Pole, sending all the water vapor up to extinguish the incoming cosmic flames. Makes perfect sense.
The teaser trailer for the film does a good job selling you on the notion that Southern California is going to get wrecked in biblical fashion one way or another. Now the question remains as to whether they will have this most disastrous of disaster flicks ready for release before the end of 2012, seeing as how this upcoming year – thanks to the Mayan calendar hooey – is going to be a banner year for direct-to-DVD disaster filmmaking.
The Disaster Wars portion of the title also gives me some indication that this could be the start of a whole new film franchise. I hope so. Imagine the possibilities. I don’t know about you, but I really want to see Disaster Wars: Water Spout vs. Wildfire.
