Demeking, The Sea Monster to Come Ashore in October

October is really shaping up DVD-wise. Now we can add a new giant monster movie from Japan that until now I had somehow not heard about. The 2009 daikaiju movie Demekingu is slated for a US DVD release in October under the Americanized title Demeking, The Sea Monster. Hey, as long as it’s better than Kraa! The Sea Monster, I’ll be happy.
Not a whole lot of information on this one out there, at least information not in Japanese, which is probably a big reason why the existence of the film somehow eluded a kaijuphile like myself. A plot synopsis on the website Nippon Cinema, where you will also find a rather quizzical trailer that only teases the monster mayhem, describes the plot synopsis as follows:
Set in a dreary port town in 1970, the story revolves around a group of boys led by the older Kameoka (Kohei Kiyasu) who form their own exploration group. One day Kameoka meets a strange man named Hachiya (Takeshi Nadagi) who works at the local amusement park. Hachiya is convinced a vision of the future he experienced is real, and one day he will have to fight a giant monster called Demeking to stop it from destroying Tokyo. When the time comes, Hachiya suddenly up and leaves. However, with the guidance of a note he leaves behind, Kameoka and his friends set off on an adventure to discover the true nature of Demeking.
I realize the creature emerges from the ocean, but given its intergalactic origins, shouldn’t the title actually be Demeking, The Space Monster?
Demeking’s physical appearance remains a fairly well guarded secret outside a hint of its glowy, snail eyes. By all indications it’s a gigantic, bipedal, Zilla-like creature with the head of a glowy-eyed snail.
Demeking, The Sea Monster, an adaptation of Takashi Imashiro’s popular 1991 manga, will be made available to American audiences on October 12th thanks to the fine folks at Cinema Epoch. The film will be presented in anamorphic Widescreen 1.78 with English subtitles. Sorry, no DVD extras from the looks of things and no cheesy bad American dubbing either.
