‘Dead Space 2’ Remake Appears to be Shelved

In the early months of 2023, Motive Studio, a development studio within Electronic Arts, unveiled the highly anticipated Dead Space Remake. The game was met with resounding success, earning praise from critics and gamers alike. The team’s meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the graphical overhaul and sound design, was a testament to their dedication and passion for the series.

In the Dead Space Remake, players assume the role of Issacc Clarke, a space engineer who embarks on a perilous journey aboard the USG Ishimura mining ship in search of his girlfriend, Dr. Nicole Brennan. As the ship encounters a mysterious artifact known as the Marker, the crew is plunged into chaos as they are attacked by mutated aliens and fellow crew members. Issac must not only battle these necromorphs and locate Nicole but also unravel the creatures’ origin and confront his deteriorating mental state as the ship descends into madness.

So, everyone assumed that with how well Dead Space Remake was doing, a remake of the sequel was on the way. It’s important to note that Dead Space 2, when it was released, was and still is highly regarded in the survival horror community and with some general quality of life improvements, a fleshed-out story, interesting mechanics, and a fantastic blend of action and horror, it’s not hard to see why it was so beloved. However, to the surprise of many, the Dead Space 2 remake appears to have been unexpectedly shelved.

According to Jeff Grub, due to lackluster sales of the Dead Space Remake, the sequel has been shelved while in its planning stages. Since then, Electronic Arts has refuted the statement. However, further reporting claims that Motive Studios was actually testing the waters for new titles in the series before being put on indefinite hold, and the team moved over to work on the Electronic Arts Battlefield series.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a cancellation in the series. Back when Dead Space 3 came out, Visceral Games was already in the planning stages for Dead Space 4, which would have been the culmination of the series, but sadly, it never saw the light of day. I am hopeful that someday, EA will see the real potential for Dead Space and give it the wings it needs to soar. But until then, it seems like our hopes and dreams have been dashed once again by Electronic Arts.
