The History of NIGHTBREED: THE CABAL CUT + New Footage Revealed!

Clive Barker’s Nightbreed was perhaps the first truly excellent film of the 1990s, immediately striking a chord with horror fans of the era. Still, the film was so ahead of its time, 20th Century Fox didn’t know how to market it; anything outside the box tends to make executives nervous, and Nightbreed was (and is) completely unique.
Of course the film was butchered before it was released, but a few years ago, Barker started touring US theaters with Nightbreed: The Cabal Cut. It included additional footage culled from work tapes and various other sources. Unfortunately, the differing quality between the film and video footage made for a jarring and disjointed movie watching experience.
Scream Factory came to the rescue in 2014, procuring film footage that had previously been considered lost, allowing Barker to finally release something he felt proud enough about to dub a “Director’s Cut”. Still, the author and filmmaker’s quest to fully realize his vision from 1990 continues. We’ve been abuzz with news of an Ultimate Cabal Cut currently being assembled, one that boasts never-before-seen-footage and a meaty, 3+ hour runtime!

For an overview of Nightbreed and The Cabal Cut, check out the video retrospective at the top of the article. It’s produced by one of our favorite UK film critics and academics, Mr. H. In addition to providing an excellent history of the project from inception to the present, it includes freshly released footage that’s a must-watch for fans of Barker and “The Tribes of the Moon”.
“In this mini documentary I will be exploring the history of the Cabal Cut, who was involved, and how it came to be, and discussing the currently in edit bay, the longer, the higher quality, the three-hour cut of Nightbreed,” Mr. H explains. “We’ll explore who is involved in this particular cut of the movie, how it came to be, and the troublesome history of it getting to the point that it is now. Included in this video is a world exclusive on the extended footage that will be included in the film.”
Be warned, though; regarding the Ultimate Cabal Cut, Mr. H cautions: “As with all things Clive Barker, it isn’t exactly straight forward.”

Synopsis:
Aaron Boone (Craig Sheffer) is haunted by terrifying nightmares of a city of monsters. He goes to see a psychiatrist, Dr. Decker (David Cronenberg), for help. But what Boone doesn’t know is that Decker is really a serial killer. Decker frames Boone to take the fall for his murders, and Boone is killed by the police. But Boone is brought back to life by the monsters of his dreams, the Nightbreed, who in turn join Boone in his quest to stop Decker from killing again.
