10 Things ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Got Right

Robert Rodriguez’s hotly-anticipated Alita: Battle Angel hit theaters this weekend and, while it was a strong performer at the box office, fans and critics are split on the film’s artistic merit. I haven’t seen Alita yet, but our friends at WatchMojo have, and they made an entire video list of the film’s strongest aspects: “Top 10 Things Alita: Battle Angel Did Right”!
There’s a spoiler warning, but as someone who isn’t familiar with the source material, I didn’t feel as though anything crucial had been revealed. Still, if you’ve yet to see Alita and want to see the film knowing as little as possible, skip down to the synopsis at the bottom of the article. Otherwise, give the video a spin at the top of the article, or cut to the chase and read the 10 things Alita: Battle Angel did right below.
10. The Setting:
The desolate outlands on the edge of a futuristic metropolis create incredible dichotomy.
9. Break Out Star
Rosa Salazar:
She’s fantastic!
8. The Score:
The score starts innocent but evolves into something very sad. The score almost
always compliments the film perfectly.
7. Keeping Us Wanting
More:
Alita
ends with a soft-cliffhanger that will that makes audiences want more, but the it
still comes to a satisfying conclusion.
6. The Performances:
You really care about the characters; there are impressive performances all
around, creating emotional depth.
5. The Villains:
There are more than a few bad guys we can love to hate.
4. IMAX 3D:
Produced by James Cameron, the visuals are absolutely stunning and, according
to reports, the 3D adds to the story.
3. Violent Action
Scenes:
The film may be PG-13 but it has plenty of R-rated violence that got past the
MPAA.
2. Doing the Anime and Manga Justice:
Alita
stays true to the source material while adding unique innovations.
1. The CGI:
You can actually forget that the character Alita is almost exclusively CGI; it
really pushes the boundaries of what’s possible with today’s technology.
Synopsis:
Set several centuries in the future, the
abandoned Alita is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido, a compassionate
cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita
awakens, she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of
the world she finds herself in. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and
the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her
mysterious past.
