Corruption 2029 Is A New Tactics Game From The Creators Of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

As a huge fan of tactics games, I’m always happy to see new takes on the genre. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent setting up the perfect positioning, then ragequitting when my guy missed a clear shot on a 95% hit chance. When Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden launched in 2018, I loved it for the simplified hit system. All hits boiled down to 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or 0%. It was easy to understand what factored into these percentages, making the game far more tactical and less infuriating. If I wanted to take a risky shot for high reward, at least I knew why. It also had an innovative open-world system, that let you stealth around and pick your engagements more organically. Oh, also, one of the main characters was a pigman. That’s dope.
Watching the trailer for Corruption 2029, there’s no avoiding the obvious comparison. It looks a HELL of a lot like XCOM 2. The helmets look very similar to the Advent soldiers, and I’m pretty sure it’s within 10 pixels of the same minigun model. The trailer seems to be getting a fair amount of flack for this, so I figured I’d just get it out of the way right off the bat. For me, as long as Corruption 2029 is just XCOM 2 with the stealth system and simplified dice of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, it’s worth the asking price. Which seems to be what they are going for. From the Official Press Release:
Taking place in the not-so-distant future, CORRUPTION 2029 will have players command a squad of heavily augmented soldiers on a deadly mission to infiltrate an inhuman regime and discover the cause of an ominous corruption that turned America into an war-torn wasteland.
CORRUPTION 2029’s core mechanics will center around tactical, cover-based combat and stealth, though an array of distinct weapons and skills will offer multiple gameplay options to experiment with. Strategy is indispensable, as players must determine whether or not violence is necessary before engaging the enemy. Exploring environments in secret and scoping out vantage points may dramatically improve one’s chances of demolishing the country’s tyrannical rule and uncovering the truth behind America’s demise.
The most surprising thing about Corruption 2029 is the release date. Developer The Bearded Ladies isn’t making us wait long, as the game launches in just two weeks. On February 17th, players will be able to get their hands on Corruption 2029 for just $20. It’s being released exclusively on the Epic Games Store, and you can click here to pre-order.
