Big Screen Asteroids Flick Gets a New Scribe and New Plot

The new American Godzilla flick isn’t the only big screen adaptation to get a new screenwriter this week. As hard as it is to believe anyone in Hollywood thinks a feature film based on the classic arcade game Asteroids is a good idea, someone’s idea wasn’t good enough so a new writer has been brought in to take a crack at the script.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog reports that The Sorceror’s Apprentice screenwriter Matt Lopez is out as the writer of Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura’s big budget special effects extravaganza based on Atari’s iconic late 1970’s coin-op arcade game Asteroids.
Universal has hired Evan Spiliotopoulos to put his quarter in the screenwriting program and see if he can rack up a high score on the game. Spiliotopoulos’ work can also be seen in two other Universal projects: the forthcoming Snow White and the Huntsman and the cryptozoological adventure flick Charles Fort for Robert Zemeckis.
According to Heat Vision the plotline for this movie based on a video game that is nothing but a triangular spaceship shooting a dotted line laser at asteroid shaped outlines has ”evolved into the story of two estranged brothers that must team up to save Earth from an alien race.” I assume asteroids somehow play a part in this; otherwise, I don’t see why they didn’t just buy the rights to Galaxian or Sinistar instead.
Hey, remember how much everyone flocked to see that movie based on the video game Wing Commander? Me neither.
