ABOUT CONVERSATION WITH TOM SAVINI| It’s the merry month of Halloween, so it only makes sense that our ongoing screening series with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences should get into the spirit of the season. And in doing so, what better guest could we ask for than the Sultan of Splat, the God of Gore, Mr. Tom Savini, the actor, director, stuntman, and special effects whiz who made possible some of the most shocking moments in the Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchises, and who made such invaluable contributions to the filmography of George A. Romero? Join Tom for a very squishy walk down memory lane, as he moderates a highlight reel of his most awful, impressive, and impressively awful effects, discussing the astonishing body count he’s racked up during a lifetime in the horror business.

ABOUT DUSK TILL DAWN | This Quentin Tarantino-scripted, Rodriguez-directed cult mashup prettily pulls off a brilliant, bizarre brokeback premise, beginning as a sweaty, sleazy 70s-style escaped-cons-on-the-lam action picture, then turning a 180 into vampire movie territory, while never along the way taking its foot off the pedal. George Clooney stars alongside a Murderer’s Row of movie tough guys, including Fred Williamson, John Saxon, Harvey Keitel, and Danny Trejo, though none are any match for the wiles of Salma Hayek and her hypnotic snake dance. Savini, who appears in the role of biker Sex Machine alongside fellow FX Hall of Famer Greg Nicotero, will be on hand to introduce, and let the gory times roll.

ABOUT THE ACADEMY AT METROGRAPH | The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) began a yearlong residency at Metrograph in July 2017, bringing exciting and entertaining programs to the big screen. Programs in ACADEMY AT METROGRAPH have and continue to feature onstage conversations with filmmakers and scholars of motion pictures, tributes, newsreels, rarely seen clips from past Oscar® ceremonies, and home movies from Hollywood legends.  This monthly series highlights unique archival elements, including recent restorations and film prints from the Academy Film Archive by celebrating classic moments from the Academy’s 90-year history.
