It may be April Fools’ Day today, but this surprising piece of news is all too real. Sega has released 8-Bit Bayonetta on Steam, a free side-scrolling game featuring everyone’s favorite Umbra Witch. Apparently being bad never felt so retro.

Series developer PlatinumGames actually created this 2D spinoff back in 2010, so it’s about time we finally got to play it. The game’s achievement list contain segments of code which, when combined, form a link to a countdown site. We don’t know what project the site is teasing, but we’ll find out in 11 days.

Could they be teasing the announcement of Bayonetta 3? We sure hope so.

Although it was assumed that Nintendo had obtained the rights to the Bayonetta series, as they published the second game as a first-party exclusive, it would appear that Sega has retained ownership. Roll on Bayonetta 3!
