Exclusive: El Topo Sequel Closer to Reality!

Sons of El Topo posterIt is one of those mythic projects in cult cinema: Sons of El Topo (aka Abelcaine), the long-rumored sequel to Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 1970 masterpiece. The project has had numerous false starts, in part due to the infamous feud between Jodorowsky and El Topo rights-holder Allen Klein. Now the two men have made peace, and it looks like the sequel is much closer to happening.

Grindhouse icon David Hess spoke with Dread Central and announced that he’s in talks to play a major role. “The film would star Nick Nolte, Marilyn Manson, and myself. I’d be playing one of the bad guys,” he says. “We’re scheduled to film in 2007. Alejandro is now 81 years old, so he wants to put this on the fast track.”

The sequel takes place after a nuclear apocalypse, where the world’s survivors fight to enter a holy paradise – the burial site of El Topo, which sits on an island protected by strange forces. Caine and Abel, the sons of El Topo, have long been separated because of their prophetic rivalry. But a group of technological marauders steal their mother’s body to gain access to the island, so the brothers must unite to take them down and bring their mother to her final resting place.

Little is known about the film’s current development, but this is the most exciting prospect we’ve heard in a while.
