Attention all shambling masses! Now is the time to begin practicing your zombie makeup and your shuffle-walk. Pittsburgh’s “The It’s Alive Show,” who for the last two years have set Guiness World Records for Largest Gathering of Zombies, has decided to go global, and is coordinating the first ever World Zombie Day.
Thus far, coordinators from New York, Atlanta, Nashville, and Sacremento have all signed on stateside, with coordinators from Germany and England joining in the fun as well, and more joining every day. The purpose? To raise awareness of world hunger.

While many cities have their own zombie walks, none have met with as great of success as the one held in Monroeville, which, in 2007, claimed a record 1124 ghouls. They also collected over a ton (literally!) of food for the local area food bank. This year, participants in each city are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to benefit their local food banks as well. According to the official press release, “A mass effort will be taken on worldwide to prove that charity, goodwill, and zombie love can flourish in every nation regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, or religion, and that no matter where or how we die…We will come back!”

World Zombie Day will be held in conjunction with the 2008 ZombieFest, which will take place in zombie-historical Monroeville on October 25-26. The walk itself will be on the morning of Sunday, October 26, at the Monroeville Mall. Dread Central will be covering the convention and the walk.
