When it was first announced that James Wan was going right from Dead Silence, a Gothic slice of horror that I’m an unabashed fan of, on to a vigilante movie called Death Sentence, it felt like he was trying to do anything he could to buck his Saw image.

Indeed, you couldn’t get less Saw than Dead Silence, but something tells me Death Sentence is really going to be the movie that helps people see Wan as a multi-skilled director. Kevin Bacon stars as a mild-mannered executive who has as close to the perfect life as any man could want. One horrible night he witnesses something that changes him forever, and his grief turns him into a one-man killing machine, willing to do anything possible to protect his family.

As you can see, Universal has finally released the very cool poster and first set of stills from the film (actually they did it while I was in Montreal so I apologize if you’ve seen this elsewhere), and today Yahoo! Movies got the first look at the trailer for the film. So it’s all coming together well for Wan!
