Sympathy Helmer Talks Screamfest Showing
Just the other day we showed off the full rundown of what would be playing at this year’s Screamfest LA (“Screamfest 2007 Lineup” – October 2007), and to say the least the list was impressive.
One of the indie films that jumped out at me is Sympathy (review), which I recently got the chance to see myself and was quite impressed by. I dropped a line to director Andrew Moorman to get his thoughts on playing one of the genre’s most well-respected festivals, and suffice it to say, he’s happy: ”Sympathy is a purely independent film, a three-year effort made by fans themselves with an amount of passion and care that cannot be matched by any of this year's releases,” he started off. ”Now we have an opportunity to be seen; to pack a great venue, experience the film with a great crowd, and hopefully convince the distribution reps in the back of the theatre that independent films that break the formula they see so essential can be compelling enough to warrant release.”
Moorman and his crew have relied on word-of-mouth to help get the movie to the stage it’s at now, where it will be screening in front of The Tripper and Shrooms on Thursday, October 18th, and he thanks the Internet for bringing him this far. ”The internet attention has been incredible!” he exclaimed. ”While the rest of Hollywood sees horror as the red-headed stepchild of cinema, I'm fucking glad we picked this genre because it undeniably houses the Greatest Fans in the World. Websites like this prove that the passion for these films is unparalleled, and the desire to unite and take back the privilege of deciding what type of content reaches the screens has never been higher.”
Moorman also wanted to make sure we let you know that they will have limited edition DVDs and posters for giveaway and that following the screening there will be a full cast & crew Q&A, which will then be followed by an after party at the legendary Viper Room. Oh, to be on the other coast...
Tickets for the screening of Sympathy and the rest of Screamfest are on sale now through the official Screamfest site; hope you can make it out to see it! Get more Sympathy info by hitting the film’s site, too!
