Sweeney Todd Everywhere for Xmas

Though I never really thought about it, I guess a small, “platform” release (that’s industry speak, by the way) for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd would have made sense since it’s more out there than usual musicals.
Such was the plan up until recently, reports Daily Variety. DreamWorks has determined they will just open it theatrically everywhere on December 21st and hope for the best. It’s an odd beast; a Tim Burton movie so there’s a built-in audience there, and Johnny Depp in the lead certainly won’t hurt, but it’s pretty easy to see Joe and Sally Moviegoer getting confused about the horror-themed musical so close to Christmas.
Funny this should come up a day after IGN ran a story about Warner Bros. become squeamish regarding the amount of blood in Todd. Specifically they had a problem with the geysers of plasma that resulted from Todd slicing the throats of his customers and a scene in which “a 10-year-old boy feeds human body parts into a meat grinder to make meat pies.” Wonder how much of that will make it to the big screen!
Should be interesting to see how it does. DreamWorks is hoping that the continued success of the Pirates of the Caribbean films will be more than enough to drive Sweeney Todd through the roof; we’ll see in a few months if that is the case!
