Lobo the next big werewolf film?Between The Wolfman, Underworld 3 and now Lobo, it’s positively a lycanthropic revolution in horror these days. Variety learned this morning of Lobo, a new acquisition from Stone Village (Love in the Time of Cholera, The Master and Margarita. The spec script is about a colony of nearly extinct werewolves in Brazil.

Lobo follows a man who receives a letter and some photos from his mother’s will, and decides to travel to the Amazon to find out his true roots. What he discovers is a clan of lycanthropes whom he eventually helps in their battle for survival.

Dikran Ornekian and Ryan Colluci, who are also working on a graphic novel that will be released as a prequel to the film, penned the script, and Ezna Sands is in the director’s chair. Lobo’s been fast tracked already, with production set to start on October 15th.

Though the film is about werewolves, director Sands told the trade that he’s approaching it more as a Western than anything else, something in the vein of Once Upon a Time in the West; “I have the opportunity to bring back to audience the kind of hero they had in the ’70s, someone as dark and conflicted as the new James Bond or the Dark Knight.” Sands said. ”Our intention is to tell a single story over three films, and this first chapter is a guy who makes a massive revelation.”

What a surprise, a built-in trilogy! Keep it here for more info on Lobo as its production nears!
