Sony Off to Transylvania

Hotel TransylvaniaIt’s about time modern CG animation technology got around to giving some new respect to the classic monsters. Today Sony made the announcement, via Variety, that plans are in the works for a new animated monster comedy called Hotel Transylvania to be produced by the same team behind next month’s kiddie release Over the Hedge.

The story is about classic monsters including Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dracula, and the Werewolf hiding out in a hotel on the outskirts of Transylvania, pondering their relevance in an age where they don’t seem needed or appreciated. We have Stephen Sommers and his damn Van Helsing to partially blame for that.

Anthony Stacchi and David Feiss will helm Hotel Transylvania with writing duties falling to Don Rhymer, who also wrote next summer’s animated feature Surf’s Up. The studio says Hotel won’t be ready until 2009, which seems like a ridiculously long time to wait. Let’s hope it’s worth it!
