I wanted to title this article “SARAH LANDON AND THE DVD OF THE MOVIE MOST OF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD OF” but that was a little too long.
If you’re reading this right now then you’re probably amongst the millions and millions of people who did not go see Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour (review) during its very brief limited theatrical release last October. Most of you probably aren’t even aware such a movie exists. Most of you probably don’t even care about a PG-rated attempt to create a new Goosebumps-esque franchise based around a young heroine and her encounters with the supernatural. Then again, some of you might be morbidly curious and others might have small children who are very easily entertained.
“Far away from home, in the small town of Pine Valley, Sarah Landon (newcomer Rissa Walters) finds herself all alone, staying in the guesthouse of her late friend’s grandmother. When she promised to visit, she didn’t realize she wouldn’t be staying in the main house, and she didn’t realize that the guesthouse was haunted. Or at least it seems that way with all the strange things that are going on in there. But that soon becomes the least of the 17-year-ld’s worries. When she learns of the town’s dark secret, she finds herself in the middle of a haunting mystery that involves two brothers, the local psychic, and an evil spirit. The big question soon becomes, what will happen between midnight and 1 A.M.?”
If you’ve read my spoiler-riffic review, then you already know that my biggest beef with this film is that the Sarah Landon character is pretty much reduced to being a spectator in her own darn movie. See those two guys on the box art? They’re the real stars of the film. Both of those young actors have the last name “Comrie”. So does the director. So do the writers. So do the producers. See a pattern?
Sarah Landon’s paranormal hour will come with the stroke of midnight on September 9th when Sony Home Entertainment gives Sarah Landon and the Paranormal Hour its overdue DVD release. Unless being presented in widescreen format is considered a special feature, it sounds like this is going to be a bare bones release.
Given the film only pulled in about $800,000 total during its theatrical run, I rather suspect that we won’t be seeing any further exploits of young Sarah Landon – at least theatrically. If the DVD does decent enough business, who knows?
