Thanks to the very cool folks at AICN, Quint especially, my wife and I got to check out a screening of the much-loved Spanish horror movie The Orphanage (review) the other night in Boston, which was attended by the film’s screenwriter, Sergio Sanchez, and director, J.A. Bayona.
Though I did get to meet the pair, I didn’t get to chat with them for they were in a rush, but if I had I would’ve asked about Sanchez’s 3993 script, which he recently discussed with Sci Fi Wire because it may be the project Guillermo del Toro jumps to after he finishes Hellboy II: The Golden Army.
“It’s going to be shot in the Spanish language, and it’s supposed to complete the trilogy with Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth,” Sánchez told the Wire. “And it’s also a fantasy film, with the Spanish Civil War in the background.”
Though no more specifics were revealed, Sanchez hinted that the recent re-opening of common graves in Spain has something to do with the plot and that the title refers to two time periods: 1993 and 1939, both of which have events that relate to one another in the movie.
Del Toro is attached to about 200 films in one form or another now so it’s impossible to tell what will come next, but don’t be surprised if this is it. I’m sure he’ll be itching to do something Spanish and low-budget by the time he’s done dealing with Universal on Hellboy II. Keep it here for more!
