Release Plans for The Road & Meat Train

Seems that studios these days are becoming more and more wary of when and how they release their horror titles, and just how much exposure they will get when they’re out. I know our genre is supposed to scare people, but this is getting out of hand.
First up, The Weinstein Company announced their rollout plans for John Hillcoat’s The Road, the adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel that stars Viggo Mortensen and Guy Pearce. They’ll throw it out on both coasts (that’s New York and LA to you) on November 14th, followed by a limited release elsewhere on the 21st before finally giving it a wide exposure on the 26th.
Chances are they’re hoping the slow build up will get people talking about the film, which follows a father (Mortensen) as he attempts to get his son to safety across a cannibal-filled post-apocalyptic wasteland. Sounds like a great Thanksgiving movie to me!
It should come as no surprise, but STYD has also learned that Lionsgate have scaled down the August 1st “>Midnight Meat Train (review) release to a scant 100 theaters, fulfilling their contractual obligation to Lakeshore, with a quick DVD to follow in the fall. There’s still hope that more cities will get to ride on the Train, but the way things have been going for this flick, you may not want to hold your breath.
