Red Returns to Vamps With Nightlife

John Fallon and Eric Red!During the Weekend of Horrors this past weekend, Eric Red (pictured with John Fallon), screenwriter of The Hitcher and Near Dark and director of Body Parts and Bad Moon, took part in a Q&A to discuss his upcoming film, 100 Feet, which is still settling on a distribution deal. Once the film is out, he’s poised to return to the sub-genre he kicked so much ass with in Near Dark with a new vampire film called Nightlife.

Well, perhaps “new” isn’t the right word; Nightlife has actually been sitting in Red’s “to-do” pile for quite a while and came very close to getting made previously, but Icons of Fright reported from the Q&A that it’s in the very early stages of pre-production.

“It’s a contemporary vampire story set in San Francisco,” Red told the Fango crowd. ”It’s very graphic in terms of violence and sexuality. It’s about a girl who comes to San Francisco looking for her missing sister. She received a letter from her and she’s come to find her and she meets this guy who’s very handsome and charismatic and successful who was friends with her sister, and he wants to help her find her. This guy, of course, is a vampire and her sister got away from him. But he turned the sister into a vampire, and she’s now trying to find a way (since he never told her how to kill vampires) to learn how to kill vampires so she can kill him. So you have one sister going together with this guy to try to find her missing sister. And then the other sister learning how to kill vampires so she can get this guy, and they’re all headed on a collision course.”

I read an early draft of the script, and I gotta say it’s a damn good story. There are some elements to the vampire mythology that I’ve never seen done before, so I’m interested to see how this turns out. Keep it here for updates on Nightlife and our very own on-camera chat with Red very soon!
