Platinum Dunes Status Report

While on the set of the Friday the 13th remake, we had the chance to sit down with the men behind the film, Platinum Dunes’ Andrew Form and Brad Fuller. Together they gave us a good overview of what’s on the horizon for Dunes and their various projects.
First, will there ever be a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film, despite having a one-armed Leatherface? ”The issue with these movies is that since we’re not creating them, we don’t own them,” Fuller explained. ”The rights holders are entrusting their children to us, as it were, and in the case of Chainsaw Kim Henkel, Robert Kuhn and Tobe Hooper gave us two opportunities to show our take. If they came to us and asked us to do a third, I can’t imagine we would say no because we love those characters.” So far nothing has happened on that front, save for the “>recent announcement that Henkel would be tackling his own TCM movie soon. It’ll be interesting to see where that goes!
Though most of us don’t want it to happen, Platinum Dunes is also signed to remake Rosemary’s Baby. The duo understand it’s not really the way fans wish it could be, but, ”We’re horror fans; how do you say no?!” Fuller exclaimed. ”If we don’t do Rosemary’s Baby, someone else is, and since we’re horror fans, we want to take our own shot rather than read about someone else doing it … All the shit we get for doing these things, it really just comes from being huge fans and wanting to take a shot.”
So where does Baby stand? ”We have not decided on a storyline for Rosemary’s Baby yet,” he went on. ”There are two or three competing writers working on it now. I can say that one of our takes is supernatural and one that takes the story and roots it in reality. Which we’re going to go with is a decision we’re going to have to make as soon as we wrap this movie and head back to LA, sit down with Paramount and really hash out what kind of story they want us to tell for them and what’s the most intelligent way to tell it.”
Those were the only remakes we really discussed (well, other than the one we were there to see made…), but that wasn’t the end. Dunes is also behind the Dennis Quaid-starrer The Horsemen, about a grieving widower who discovers a connection between himself and suspects in a serial killing case linked to the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse; ”What happened on Horsemen is we made the movie, then we had to do a couple days of reshoots and because of various delays we literally just finished that a couple of weeks ago. We’re going out to distributors with it now,” they explained. ”That is a very challenging movie simply because the subject matter is so dark, so we’re figuring out that now.”
Another original Dunes is behind that has a more definite future is The Unborn, helmed by David Goyer. ”That just wrapped; it’ll hopefully be out by Halloween.” Fuller said. ”That was a fantastic experience, Gary Oldman was so amazing, incredibly prepared, and David Goyer did a really great job… that whole experience was great for us.” In case you’ve forgotten, The Unborn follows a young woman trying to fight off the spirit of a young boy who’s been banned from heaven.
So what’s the future hold for Platinum Dunes? It’s not all remakes, that much is obvious. ”We’re now trying to integrate an original movie in between the remakes,” Fuller assured us. ”We’re pretty sure our next movie will be an original called The Butcherhouse Chronicles. We don’t want to stop making horror movies, and if they’re going to keep offering us these properties, we’re not going to pass on them, but if we can put something fresh and original then maybe in 20 years they can remake our remakes and remake our originals…” he joked, ”That’s the goal!”
