By now you should be fully aware of Monster Mondays at the Pioneer Theater in New York City. At least once a month, East 3rd street gets just a little creepier as this small independant theater plays host to movie premieres and screenings of films you always wanted to see on the big screen, sometimes featuring the film makers themselves in attendance.
March 5th was a night of giant monsters and classic slashers. First up was a screening of Bong Joon-ho’s The Host (DVD review), that Korean sea monster turned kidnapper epic movie you’ve been hearing so much about, saw commercials for and then couldn’t watch because it was playing nowhere near you. The Host is a perfect example of a movie that seriously NEEDS to be seen on a big screen so that you can fully enjoy every charge made by the huge fish thing!
Next up was a rare screening of Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (review). Usually for a documentary you’d like to be packed into your favorite comfy chair at home, ready to flip channels at the first sign of boredom, but for this hybrid of clips show/documentary, it feels right at home in a theater. Unlike the normal Bravo Channel shows where you get to watch random celebs and comedy troupe unknowns talk about how creeped out they were by horror movies, Going to Pieces. provides you a history of the slasher genre as complete as it gets, causing me to make a mental note more than once. I hadn’t seen more than a few of these gems! Providing insight into these films are industry pros and fellow filmmakers who’s pure love for horror shines through with every word uttered.
The month doesn’t begin and end with Monster Mondays. This Monday, March 7th at 7pm, The Pioneer screens Albert Fish, the true story of a sadomasochistic cannibal and serial killer who lured children to their deaths in Depression-era New York City. People fascinated with America’s true tales of horror should not miss this one! Director John Borowski will be on hand after the screening to field questions on this chilling topic so, once again, another unique opportunity. Tickets should go quick so don’t waste time!
