Perfume Smells Success

Perfume German poster (click to see it bigger!)Good news for those of us who want a little something different from our serial killer films. The lush English-language adaptation of Patrick Suskind’s 1985 novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer only opened in five German cities last week but managed to still draw in 250K movie lovers to see the admittedly non-mainstream film.

Perfume is the story of a young man who was born without a scent of his own but is hypersensitive to the smells of others. Stopping at nothing to create the perfect perfume, he cuts a path of terror across 1738 Paris. The book upon which it’s based was a huge bestseller overseas, and the author was notoriously undecided on whom to sell the rights for it to until he came across the work of prolific producer Bernd Eichinger (Resident Evil, Last Exit to Brooklyn).

A huge media blitz and buckets of promotional money are what helped give the film its opening weekend success despite mixed reviews across the country. Dreamworks will be distributing it here in the States on December 27th, so expect to start seeing more about it in the coming weeks!
