New Nightmare Writer Hired

Wesley Strick penning the new Nightmare on Elm StreetNew Line is making its move to bring the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise back into the limelight. THR reports this morning that Doom and Wolf writer Wesley Strick has been brought on board to author the script that will re-invent Freddy Krueger for the 21st Century.

The trade reports the high school setting from the original will remain in place (of course), but the remake will delve deeper into the psychology of nightmares as well as Freddy Krueger himself. They also confirmed that the tone will be dark, so hopefully our new Freddy won’t be cracking wise every time he’s on screen.

The real question is: Who will that new Freddy Krueger be? If they’re going the Friday the 13th remake route, they won’t be bringing in anyone from the original series, which mean Englund is out. If they’re smart and realize that he’s really the only guy that can play Freddy, he’s in.

Only time will tell, but it’s becoming more and more real now. New Line hopes to have the new film done in time for the original’s 25th anniversary, which is next year.

What's wrong with Hodder? He was the best Jason ever, at least in my opinion. He brought SCARY back to Jason in Part 7...of course, a LOT of that had to do with Buechler's makeup on Jason in that one too. As far as Freddy, Englund is the ONLY person that could make him scary again. At least he was able to pull off the serious in New Nightmare...I think he could do it again. But what made Freddy scary and fun was the fact that he was doing it FOR THE FUN OF IT. Not because he was trying to kill his sister, or trying to revenge his mom or anything like that...so him pulling a wisecrack every now and then was cool by me...

I don't know about Robert playing Freddy. He's pretty much let the goofy clown Freddy shit get to his head. Unless he can get back into the same headspace as the first Nightmare's Freddy, then I say bring in a new actor--preferably somebody unknown, with just a touch of crazy.

Darren Lynn Bousman is going to direct this now that SCANNERS didn't work out for him. I'm surprised they don't let im take a stab at the script as well.

Robert Englund could still be covered in makeup. Age shouldn't be a factor, considering the man isn't hobbling around with a cane.

Sigh.

Considering the high continuity standards (ha!) of the original series of films, im sure this could just as easily be called a sequel as a remake. Unless they're having a character named Nancy with a boyfriend named Glen as the stars, then calling it a remake is purely cosmetic. So just look at this as a sequel and you'll probably sleep better...i know i will. I think I'll do the same with the F13 "remake" (where jason is an adult? how is that a remake of the original, anyway? perhaps Michael Bay should be referring to this as a remake of F13 part 2. That would be ballsy. Remake a sequel without remaking the original, and call it what it is: "Platinum Dunes presents Friday the 13th Part 2"!)

Well said.

Although I think I've read that they're saying it's NOT really a remake of the first, but more like a sequel that would fit somewhere around the timeframe of 2, 3 and 4.

Either way, bring 'em on, I don't care. If they're good then they could reboot the franchises (Think of them as the horror equivalent of Batman Begins...but not of Superman Returns *shudder*) and bring us more Freddy & Jason goodness.

Where I am glad they did't bring back the most recognizable Jason (Kane Hodder) I agree with the above posters who say that Englund could still be Freddy.
