When we last saw Ash, he had been sucked into an alternate universe where the Marvel Super Heroes battle in the streets of New York City … and it’s all perfectly normal. You’d think it would be great to be pushed into a world where you weren’t forced to play the hero, right? Unfortunately, with great powers comes a big fat Deadite infestation!
Many have mentioned that Marvel Zombies Vs Army of Darkness isn’t exactly Shakespeare, but hell, having the Marvel Zombie outbreak actually be caused by Deadites is a stroke of genius. It explains the wise cracking zombies, doesn’t it? Anyway, the infection starts at the top of the food chain and before long, The Avengers are all serious meat eaters. Once again, Ash gets to say I told you so, but ops to duck and cover until he can find The Necronomicon and end this plague as he’s done countless times before.
This takes us into issue two where Ash has teamed up with your just bitten, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. This book is basically Ash tearing ass through the blood soaked streets as he comes across familiar Marvel icons ripping into the civilian populace. Highlights include a brief alliance with Frank Castle (the man called The Punisher) which of course makes Ash snicker more than once. Frank has his own agenda so the search continues. Ash’s next run in is with a circa 1970’s Dazzler (what else would she be wearing in this book??!!) who takes on his cause until a shocking cliffhanger ending complete with the horror of … HOWARD THE DUCK!!!!
How can you not be reading this book yet? It’s completely ridiculous and 100% fun. You’ll geek out over watching the start of the Marvel Zombies outbreak … you’ll geek out over Ash doing what he does best … you’ll geek out over Ash hitting on the never ending super cleavage of New York City … ya know, you’ll just be geeking all over the place. Dig the eye candy…
Issue three answers the magic question; who the hell did Howard the Duck just eat? Bet you never thought you’d be asking yourself that question, huh?
The answer is another genius moment for the book that’s supposed to be just mindless fun. Ash goes head to hear with our fowl flesh eater (I should have written for the 1960’s Batman show, eh?). Ash isn’t short on Marvel-themed puns himself as he chainsaws his way through the city streets with Dazzler in tow, seeking out the Necronomicon. Since the book that bites is mystical in nature, Ash soon finds himself rubbing elbows (though he’d like to rub other things) with the Scarlet Witch who advises him to seek out Doctor Strange. Damn good idea! Of course, getting there is half the fun.
Sure, it’s more of the same Marvel Zombie madness with hysterical cannibal chaos in the background of most shots, but you’ll agree it never get’s old. Why else do you think the Marvel Zombies trade STILL hasn’t gone to soft cover?! Zombies + Marvel Comics = Cash Money. Throw in Ash and you’ve got a cartoon I’d watch once a week for the rest of my life. My only complaint? The book is so much fun that I read it so fast, it’s painful to wait for the next issue.
Also of note to people discovering this for the first time; if you have ever read Marvel Comics, you’ll recognize every cover. Artist Arthur Sydam recreated your favorite, legendary Marvel moments on each Marvel Zombies cover and continues these masterpieces on Marvel Vs. Army. Be sure to watch for variant covers to double your zombie pleasure. Here is a sneak peek at issue 3 until you can get your ass out of that bean bag chair and hit the local comic shop…
