MST3K Fans Get Something to Shout About

Fans of the series “Mystery Science Theater 3000” have something new to shout about. The popular series that ran for 11 seasons, 198 episodes, on two different networks about a man and his robot puppet comrades trapped on a space station and forced to riff on really bad movies sent to them by a pair of mad scientists is jumping ship from Rhino – who have released numerous multi-episode box sets over the years – to Shout! Factory. Home Media Magazine wrote the following about the new deal:
“Shout! Factory has secured worldwide home entertainment and digital download rights to the long-running cult TV series “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” The multiyear deal gives Shout! Factory exclusive physical and electronic distribution rights to all “Mystery Science Theater 3000” branded properties — including a vast library of original episodes that have never before been issued on DVD or been available for digital download.”
No announcements yet on what their first release will be their first release or when.
Not so coincidentally, Shout! Factory has already been releasing DVDs by “The Film Crew”: “MST3K” alumni Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett doing their own variation on the classic series. That’s in addition to the RiffTrax they already do providing humorous commentaries that can be downloaded and played in sync with many high profile recent Hollywood releases.
And then there’s the recently unveiled Cinematic Titanic, the new “MST3K”-style movie riffing series from “MST3K” creator Joel Hodgson, along with original cast members Trace Beaulieu, Frank Connif, Mary Jo Pehl, and so on.
At this point I don’t see why they don’t just go ahead and bring back “Mystery Science Theater 3000” altogether but Jim Mallon, who owns the copyright on the show and its characters, is apparently opposed to doing so for whatever reason.
But there is yet more good news for Satellite of Love fans; the long out-of-print Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie, in which they riffed on the film This Island Earth, is being rereleased to DVD on May 6th. Copies of the original run were so limited that I’ve seen the DVD sell for anywhere between $50 and $150. This new DVD will only run you about $15.
