Horror History: Happy Birthday FRANK DARABONT Director of THE MIST & More

On this day in horror history, Frank Darabont was born in 1959. Darabont is known for some masterpieces. But he is surely known best as the director of (hands-down) one of the greatest motion pictures of all time, The Shawshank Redemption.

But the man also sports one of the best genre resumes ever. After all, he wrote the scripts for two of horror’s true classics: Chuck Russell’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and Russell’s 80s remake of The Blob with Kevin Dillon.

He also penned the insulting bad The Fly II. You know, for the record.

But his genre contributions don’t stop there. Oh, no. Darabont is also the writer-director behind the classic Stephen King adaptations The Green Mile and The Mist.

And let’s not forget, Darabont also developed and executive produced the first (and first half of the second) season of AMC’s hit horror series The Walking Dead.

The Mist sports a surprisingly low 71% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: Frank Darabont’s impressive camerawork and politically incisive script make The Mist a truly frightening experience.

It follows David Drayton (Thomas Jane) who heads into town to gather food and supplies with his young son after a storm. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping them (and others) in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside. But that’s nothing compared to the threat within, a zealot (Marcia Gay Harden) calling out for a sacrifice.

What’s your favorite Frank Darabont script?
