Don Mancini Explains Why Universal Chickened Out on Their CHILD’S PLAY Reboot

There’s only one Chucky (the serial killer formerly known as Charles Lee Ray) but we’re likely to see the character split into two distinct entities in 2019. Original Child’s Play mastermind Don Mancini is working on a TV series that will pick up where 2017’s Cult of Chucky left off; simultaneously, MGM is working on a rebooted feature film, one that will reimagine Chucky as an A.I. run amok.

It turns out, MGM isn’t the first big studio to plan a Child’s Play reboot. During a recent panel at Screamfest, Mancini revealed that Universal floated the idea of reimagining Chucky a number of years back. Apparently, it was the severe backlash received by other rebooted classics (like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street) that cooled Universal’s enthusiasm. The silver lining was Curse of Chucky. Mancini explained:

“They didn’t really make that much of a splash, so then people started to rethink that. We thought with Curse we could have our cake and eat it too. We made it sort of a tonal reboot that turned out to be a sequel in disguise if that makes sense.”

It makes perfect sense to us, Don.
