Lionsgate to Chill Lovecraft Fans
Lionsgate has put out word of a new horror DVD release titled Chill they have scheduled for November 4th, because what better time to release a new horror movie than five days after Halloween?
Starring hellraisin' scream queen Ashley Laurence, “Melrose Place” doc Thomas Calabro, and movie tough guy James Russo, Chill purports to have been "inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's spine tingling tale of the macabre, Cool Air."
"In this classic retro horror thriller, Sam (Thomas Calabro, "Melrose Place"), an aspiring writer, takes a job in an L.A. inner city grocery market owned by the sinister Dr. Munoz, who claims to have a rare skin condition that forces him to live in sub-freezing temperatures. Meanwhile, Sam befriends an attractive neighborhood boutique owner Maria (Ashley Laurence, "Hellraiser"), and is unwittingly entwined in a threatening love triangle when she reveals that Detective Defazio (James Russo, "Donnie Brasco"), who is investigating the recent disappearance of two local prostitutes, is stalking her. But it's what Sam doesn't know that might prove more fatal. A darker, diabolical secret lurks behind the freezer walls of his newfound employment. Could Munoz really be keeping himself alive through occult measures and the flesh that he harvests from his kidnapped victims? Time is running out. Sam is now captive in this house of horrors. He must escape and save his own hide – literally, before the next fall of Munoz's razor-edged blades."
Serge Rodnunsky is the writer-director behind this loose Lovecraftian fright flick. I knew when I saw that name it sounded awfully familiar. His IMDB page has a long list of films he's directed, all but two of which I've never heard of. Then I remembered using a pseudonym he'd also directed a pair of stinkers titled Rodentz and Blade of the Vampire that I've reviewed for Dread Central, both of which were truly terrible.
We'll find out how Chill turned out on November 4th. Check out the Chill trailer below and hit up its MySpace page to learn more!

Oh, what the hell, we haven’t done an Evil Dead 4 story in a while, have we? Luckily The Chin got to jawing with MTV’s Movie Blog recently on that very subject, which gives us something to talk about.

It's too bad Ashley Laurence had to waste film time with this flick, she's too good for this level of shlock. I saw this last Oct. at the H.P.Lovecraft Film Fest in Portland, OR. and walked out. Badly filmed, poor make-up, stagnant and dull with very stiff dialog. There is nothing retro about this and it's not even close to somthing I'd call "lovecraftian".
I'm kinda' suprised it's getting a major label treatment, but Lionsgate seems to be all over the map these days.
