John August to Write Preacher Screenplay

John August to Write Preacher The Hollywood Insider reported today that John August has teamed up with director Sam Mendes in writing the screenplay version of the subversive comic book series Preacher. The comic centers on a small town preacher who becomes possessed by a sort of supernatural entity, half angel and half demon, and thus becomes imbued with a power potent enough to rival God. The troubled holy man travels across country in an attempt to find God, and himself, making numerous friends, and the occasional metaphysical enemy, along the way.

I’m guilty of having not read the comic myself, but I’m intrigued. It’s described as having an influence from western films in its style and themes, and I just love a good western. The imaginative characters described, coupled with a touch of existentialist exploration and presumably dark humor, paints a story that sounds both interesting and promising. August was the writing voice behind previous Tim Burton projects such as Big Fish , and so the man does have some real talent. This could be good!

You may recall that Preacher almost saw life last year as a series on HBO but died before it could get very far. What part of the overall Preacher story is to be told in the film we’re not sure of, but we’ll inform you as soon as we have more!
