Horror History: Peter Jackson’s DEAD ALIVE Is Now 29 Years Old

On this day in horror history, director Peter Jackson unleashed his outrageous gory zombie comedy Dead Alive (also known as Braindead) back in 1992.
It tells the tale of an overprotective mother spying on her grown son with his first girlfriend when a fearsome Sumatran rat-monkey bites her. When the bite turns her into a zombie, her son tries to keep her locked safely in the basement. But she still turns most of the neighbors into the walking dead. And all bloody hell breaks loose.
Considered one of the goriest films of all time, it was produced on a budget of $3M. While that’s kinda small peanuts, it was Jackson’s most expensive film up to that point. Jackson penned the script along with Fran Walsh and Stephen Sinclair. Timothy Balme stars along with Diana Peñalver, Elizabeth Moody, and Ian Watkin.

Rated R for an abundance of outrageous gore, the film sports an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: The delightfully gonzo tale of a lovestruck teen and his zombified mother, Dead Alive is extremely gory and exceedingly good fun, thanks to Peter Jackson’s affection for the tastelessly sublime.
