Hatchet Finds its Mark!

Lord knows we’ve been singing this film’s praises forever, and now finally Victor Crowley is out there and speaking for himself!
So how did the little film with virtually no advertising except from horror websites fare at the box office?
Amazing, yet not very good at the same time.
In the major cities Hatchet exceeded all expectations and had sold out shows, standing ovations, and lines to try and get in. In New York it’s been reported that Hatchet (review here) had the rowdiest crowd the Empire Theater has ever seen! In Austin news cameras showed up because the lines were so long! And in Los Angeles there were double standing ovations! But there’s a bittersweet pill to swallow along with the success. In other cities across the Midwest and South … the theaters sat empty because no one knew it was out.
But we all did our jobs and Hatchet‘s certainly a success. Overall the flick came in at about $1,200 per screen, making a total of just around $100K for the weekend. Not bad for a flick that only played on a handful of screens and with — again — no actual advertising. Reports also came in from some theaters who were showing Hatchet that even though they did not list it on their marquee or hang a poster in their lobby, fans were STILL finding it and buying tickets.
Count this one as a victory for the little guy.
No word from Anchor Bay yet about whether or not the film will open wider come this weekend. Keep it here for more as we learn it, and if you can, take your ass to the theatre and see this fucking movie like yesterday!
