Hammer Films Begins Shooting Wake Wood

Hammer is back with The Wake WoodPrincipal photography commences today on Hammer Films’ first foray into making an original feature-length horror film since 1976’s To the Devil a Daughter (Beyond the Rave doesn’t count as it was made for the internet), the British studio announced. The film is called The Wake Wood and goes in front of cameras in County Donegal, Ireland with Vertigo Films already eyeballing it for a 2009 release in the UK.

David Keating is directing The Wake Wood from a script he co-wrote with Brendan McCarthy, and the story goes a little something like this: Still grieving the death of nine-year-old Alice – their only child – at the jaws of a crazed dog, vet Patrick and pharmacist Louise relocate to the remote town of Wake Wood where they learn of a pagan ritual that will allow them three more days with Alice. The couple find the idea disturbing and exciting in equal measure, but once they agree terms with Arthur, the village’s leader, a far bigger question looms – what will they do when it’s time for Alice to go back?

The Wake Wood stars Aidan Gillen (“The Wire”), Eva Birthistle (“Middletown”) and Timothy Spall (Harry Potter series, Sweeney Todd).

Good news for Hammer fans, as this one sounds like it’ll be much more indicative of what Hammer should represent than Beyond the Rave was. Keep in mind the studio also has its hands on remake rights for Let the Right One In as well as plans for two more films, The Resident and The Quiet Ones, which hopefully we’ll be hearing more on soon.
