Exclusive: The Bay Nabs Coscarelli’s Quest

Don Coscarelli is well known to fans of the strange and obscure for many reasons; chief among them is the Phantasm series, but he also has the classic sword-n-sandal movie Beastmaster and horror/comedy Bubba Ho-Tep on his resume as well. You would think with such a varied career we’d have seen all he has to offer released on DVD by now, right?

Wrong.

Back in 1989 he directed a movie with Lance Henriksen, Dermot Mulroney, and Catherine Keener called Survival Quest, a movie so obscure it was never even made available through VHS! The sexy folks at Anchor Bay let us know last week that after years of wallowing in cult film obscurity, they’ve finally nabbed Quest and have plans to release a special edition DVD sometime in 2007.

Quest tells of a group of city slickers who go on a retreat in the middle of nowhere to become one with nature. Unfortunately a paramilitary group has picked the same weekend to go camping in the same woods and one of them gets the crazy idea into his head that the city boys are responsible for the death of their boss. He convinces his compatriots to hunt down the out-of-towners one by one, which is most definitely a good way to ruin a fun weekend outing.

No details on the disc are available as of yet, but considering the Bay is working with Coscarelli on new Phantasm and Phantasm III discs, it’s safe to assume that Survival Quest will be stuffed with features as well. Stay tuned for more as we get it!
