Call of Cthulhu (2005)
Directed by Andrew H. Leman
This highly-praised, ingeniously executed adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s most famous story does what so many Lovecraft tales before it could never manage to; make the master’s stories real. Using stop-motion animation, filmed in black and white and fully silent aside from a haunting score. The DVD includes almost a half hour of making-of footage, deleted scenes, a slide show and a lot more. Be sure to read our review of Call of Cthulhu to learn more about the flick but rest assured; this is a must-own DVD for anyone who calls themselves a Lovecraft fan. Buy it here!
Carnival of Blood (1970)/Undertaker and His Pals (1966)

Oh, how nice; a grindhouse double feature with a very familiar looking cover. Wonder why it took companies this long to finally start calling things “grindhouse” again? Me too. Carnival of Blood is about a maniac who uses a carousel ride at Coney Island to capture his victims, whom he then dismembers. It’s up to a local DA vacationing with his fiancé to stop the madness. Undertaker tells of three friend who drum up business for the local undertaker by randomly murdering about town. Buy it here!
Defenceless (2006)

Previously released as part of the Savage Sinema From Down Under box set (review), this latest entry from ballsy Aussie filmmaker Mark Savage is the very sad tale of a woman who has everything taken away from her many times over, all because she won’t sign off on a land deal to develop condos on an isolated stretch of beach. Eventually she gets to return from the dead for revenge, so that’s all right. Noteable because Savage decided to make it a silent movie, aka no dialogue, which makes this the first week in the history of the DVD list that we’ve had two silent movies coming out at once! Drive Thru (2006)

It sure sounds like a good idea on paper; a food chain restaurant’s mascot, Horny the Clown (sure, that’d work) goes on a killing spree surrounding young Mackenzie Carpenter, who’s just about to turn 18. Unfortunately, according to The Foywonder’s review of Drive Thru, no one involved with the film had a clue what they were doing. Which is even worse when you take into consideration the fact that this is one of the coolest covers Liosngate’s come up with in a while. Buy it here!
The Final Patient (2005)

No one wants to grow old, that’s just a fact of life. The medications, the pain, the colostomy bags; it’s just a bad scene all around. So when a county doctor discovers the fountain of youth, quite accidentally, he chooses to keep the secrets it holds to himself. Two curious med students want to know just how the hell he stays so young, but discover the key to living forever is a lot more horrifying than simply growing old naturally… Buy it here!
Hannibal Rising (2007)

Personally, this whole series lost me after Hannibal, which I thought was a surprisingly good sequel to Silence of the Lambs, despite the inherit love story. So when they discussed doing a prequel, which I saw as more money in the pockets of now one-trick pony author Thomas Harris, I wrote it off all together. Seriously, who cares where Hannibal came from and why do we have to suddenly feel sympathetic for him? Ridiculous. Kill House (2006)

I don’t know about you, but finding out that there’s a serial killer out and about targeting only realtors would not surprise me in the least, especially out here in Mass where it seems everyone is out to gouge you for every possible penny. I’m sure it’s no better in San Francisco, where Kill House takes place. The prime suspect in the deaths of a string of realtors is a ex-con hired by a property owner but when he’s captured and the killings just get worse, where do the police look next? Buy it here!
Legacy of Blood (2007)

Is it just me or is this about the fifth time this film has shown up on our DVD lists? Seems like I’ve written about this plot more times than should be natural, but here goes; the story of Legacy of Blood involves a group of greedy relatives who gather at a deceased family members home to collect on their inheritance, but things go horribly wrong thanks to their bottomless greed. Or something along those lines. It does have John Carradine in it, so it can’t be all bad! Buy it here!
The Prodigy (2006)

A professional assassin decides decides he needs a successor to his deadly buisness and takes a sadistic new kid under his wing. If the kid refuses, he will be killed. Tough choice, that. Tons of action, guns, explosions, and violence ensue. I know, it doesn’t really sound like a horror movie, perse, but we’ve been told it actually has a very Carpenter-esque feel to it. In fact, it’s been called “a crime thriller that plays like a horror movie”, hence it’s inclusion on this list. Check it out! Buy it here!
When Darkness Falls (2006)

For some reason, even though it only has one title, this is actually two gay-themed horror stories on one DVD. What a deal, huh? In When Darkness Falls, Kevin invites his new boyfriend up to an isolated cabin for the weekend and said boyfriend goes along despite rumors of an evil cemetery nearby. Then, in Best of Care, Bill’s been taking care of Donny for a long time, longing for a life outside their home. When Bill gets a chance to do something different and perhaps change his lot one night, Donny won’t let it happen. Buy it here!
