Death Becomes Shia

Page from the Coraline graphic novelI remember first doing a news story on the possibility of Neil Gaiman’s Death character coming to the big screen back in the days when I ran the first horror site I ever worked, so don’t for any reason think this story means it’s actually happening this time. But I guess it is a step in the right direction…

The blog site Film Ick reported this weekend that they have heard word of Shia LeBeouf being involved in the big-screen adaptation of Death: The High Cost of Living, the Sandman spin-off that featured the cute, gothy Death spending time among us lowly mortals to learn more about us. Shia will not play the titular cutie, being the wrong gender and all, but the site did go on to say that role has gained interest from “one famous young actress in particular”. Not to be too vague or anything … Oh, and Guillermo del Toro apparently has some involvement in it, as well, though they’re not sure in what capacity.

All good things, to be sure, but again don’t get your hopes up until you start actually seeing production photos from the filming.

In the search for confirmation of any of this I checked Gaiman’s official site and while I didn’t find anything about Death, I did discover that he posted the first look at his Coraline graphic novel (with art by P. Craig Russell) a few days back, which you can see a piece of above. Pretty spooky, no? The animated Coraline film, directed by Nightmare Before Christmas helmer Henry Selick, is apparently in the midst of post-production now, so expect to see some stuff from that soon, as well!
