D Wars Eats Korean Box Office
I wonder what kind of indication it is for the success of D-War that it opened so well in South Korea, selling over $2.9 million worth of tickets on its first day. That is where the film was made, after all, and distributor Showbox is betting a lot of bank on it doing well.
The opening is just under that of The Host, which had about 100 more screens during its run, but bad word of mouth could slow the receipts down. Most who have seen it say that, while it sure has the look and feel of a Hollywood blockbuster disaster movie, the plot and acting are atrocious.
We’ll be finding out next month when Freestyle releases the film (under the title Dragon Wars) in a limited capacity here in the US. D-War has been one of the strangest movies to come out of Korea in a while, simply because it’s been in the can for a long time now and took forever to finally get out to theaters, so I’d like to see it be somewhat worth the wait. We’ll know soon enough!
