Carter Smith and the Troll

Carter Smith in talks to direct TrollCarter Smith is getting ready to see if the fans of Scott Smith’s novel The Ruins (review) will be happy with his filmed adaptation of it, which I’m sure is making him sweat just a bit. Those fans tend to be quite rabid.

He recently spoke to Fearnet about what lies down the path for him after The Ruins is out on April 4th and in addition to Come Closer, which we first told you about a few months back (“Ruins Helmer to Come Closer” – November 2007), he mentioned a project called Troll that sounds pretty twisted.

No, it’s not a remake of the 1986 Buechler movie, sorry; instead it’s based on the Finnish novel of the same name written by Johana Sinisalo. The story follows a girl who discovers a troll on her way home one night and, despite their dangerous and wild nature, decides to take it home with her. Trouble soon comes her way as the troll grows up and becomes far less cute than it was originally.

”It’s sort of a dark cross between E.T. and Lolita. It’s a very dark adult fairytale.” Smith told Fearnet, ”I love the genre but I don’t think that one is squarely a horror film.” Indeed, what I could find out about it did sound pretty out there, so here’s hoping this comes to fuition, be it straight horror or not.
