CannesThere was a bit of a slump yesterday but over at the Cannes Film Festival section of Variety news has been coming fast and furious today. We could run a single story for each film, but today’s events warrant something more. How about we wrap up today’s action in a nice little bundle of knowledge?

Wild Country
Werewolves may be the new it creatures even if Blood & Chocolate put a silver bullet right between the subgenre’s eyes. Just give Hollywood a little time to start pumping out many lycanthropic films, but in the meantime Lionsgate has gotten a hold of Craig Strachan’s project, Wild Country. The trade reports the Scottish-set creature feature uses teens pregnancy (!) to take a new spin on the werweolf sub-genre, two subjects near and dear to all out hearts here at Dread Central.

Paradise Lost
Maverick Picture’s didn’t get the memo that zombies were not sole property of the low-budget indie film market. We don’t want quality zombie flicks, do we? What am I saying?! MP’s genre division, Maverick Red, are in the process of remaking the Swedish film Paradise Lost by joining forces with Grindhouse Pictures. This undead film will focus on a brother who searches for his sister only to find that she has joined the legion of living dead.

Ghostwood
In other Swedish news, NonStop Sales from that same country has snatched the international distribution rights to Irish director Justin O’Brien’s Ghostwood which will star Patrick Bergin (King Arthur) and will have Ned Dowd as its executive producer.. According to the Variety article “The supernatural chiller “Ghostwood” takes its queue from the mythology about Ireland’s mysterious and often terrifying past. The main character, Ed Hunter, tries to solve the mysterious disappearance of his father. He travels to a remote part of Ireland and finds a little village that for centuries has been isolated and living in fear.
