Off Broadway Musical Zombie Prom Heads to the Big Screen

Zombies — those pesky little devils are everywhere right now. Just when you think the craze is starting to die down, we get something else that prolongs the undead’s stay in popular culture. Even AMC is attempting to pump more life into these shambling corpses by giving us a “Walking Dead” spin-off, aptly titled “Fear the Walking Dead,” later this year. Try as you might, escaping the zombie apocalypse is next to impossible. They just keep coming, one after another.

If you feel the need to incorporate zombies into your own creative endeavors, at least try to do something different with them. According to Variety, that’s exactly what producers Michael J. Roth and Steve Longi are hoping to do with Zombie Prom, a big-screen adaptation of the Off-Broadway musical. Even if you hate musicals with an undying passion, at least it’s not another direct-to-video Romero wannabe. I think we’ve all had our fill of those.

Here’s how Variety describes the musical.

Zombie Prom, written by John Dempsey and Dana P. Rowe, originated in the early 1990s as a musical-comedy homage to the musicals and films of the 1950s, telling the story of a forbidden romance between the rebellious bad boy Jonny and the good girl Toffee. After falling into a nuclear reactor, Jonny returns to his love as a zombie.

Sounds like a musical version of the Sean S. Cunningham-produced 1993 comedy My Boyfriend’s Back, but maybe that’s just me. For more Zombie Prom info, swing by the official website.
