Blanks on a Long Weekend

It’s good to hear that Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend) is staying away from Hollywood for the most part; they seem to screw up the man’s work and turn it into nigh unwatchable tripe.

His latest film, Storm Warning, is strictly Australian and looks pretty damn cool if you ask me. Today Fangoria learned that Blanks will be once again working Down Under, this time on a remake of Colin Eggleston’s nature fights back movie Long Weekend.

You might be sick of remakes as well, but this one’s got some promise. First, the original isn’t very well known (though Synapse, who tipped Fango off to the news, has a great DVD for it); second, it’s being updated by Everett DeRoche, who not only wrote the original but also penned Storm Warning. See how it all makes sense?

For those not familiar, Long Weekend tells of a careless couple on vacation in the Outback who show zero respect for mother nature, polluting and destroying as they go. Eventually mother nature decides to get back at them in increasingly nasty ways.

“I’ve wanted to remake this movie since I was in film school,” Blanks told the mag, “and I’m delighted to get my chance to tell one of Everett’s best stories at a point when its message will carry more weight than it did in the public consciousness 30 years ago. The picture will be shot on the southernmost tip of the Australian mainland; we will be the first feature film to have ever filmed in this location.”

Should be interesting to see; stay tuned for more as we hear it!
