Another Return of Hammer?

Hammer on it's way back... again?Much like talk of a Poltergeist sequel, rumors of reviving long-gone but not forgotten Hammer Studios seem to crop up every few years, too. The last big news on it was at least two years ago, when they had said they would be producing two to three new horror films per year, most of them aimed at the teen audience.

Fortunately that sickening development never came to fruition, and now a new investor has announced via Variety that he’s bringing Hammer back yet again. His name is John DeMol, and thankfully, he seems to realize what made Hammer great and sounds like he wants to continue the tradition. ”It is more intelligent and character-driven than traditional American ‘goreography,’ and we intend to capitalize on this and make it a global brand,” DeMol told the trade.

Spitfire Pictures has joined the Hammer board with the plan in place, once again, to produce two to three new titles per year, both for cinemas and television. In fact, a deal is already being worked out for a Hammer Horror TV series.

The key to this working is talent. If they can align themselves with people who know how to make intelligent horror films, films that both capture the feeling of the old Hammer films and at the same time modernize it, this could work masterfully. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this as it develops so keep it here for more!
