Adamson Gets Benighted

What is it about werewolf stories that make it to Hollywood always being the ones with the least amount of bite? I’ll grant you, I’ve not read Kit Whitefield’s Benighted, which takes place in an alternate reality in which 99% of the population are lycanthropes, but something tells me it’s more drama than terror.

A lot of that has to do with the fact that Andrew Adamson, director of both Shrek and The Chronicles of Narnia, has been attached to direct the adaptation. Not that there’s anything wrong with either film, but both are decidedly un-horror and one wonders why a werewolf tale would attract him if not for themes of alienation and racism...which are the exact reasons he found it interesting according to Variety.

I guess I just want to see a werewolf film about werewolves -- mean, primal beasts who rip and tear with claws and teeth. Something vicious and fun. Benighted is the story of one of the few normal, non-lycanthropic citizens being victimized by a werewolf and the search for justice following his death. Not exactly a rip 'em up werewolf tale, is it?
