Steam Sale: The Top 10 Underrated Horror Games You Should Buy

With the Steam Spring Sale quickly coming to an end, I wanted to take a look at some of the underrated horror gems on sale. So I won’t be touching on your Resident Evils or Metro 2033s, but the more overlooked titles that you can snag on the Steam Spring Sale.

The Chant

Set on a remote island spiritual retreat, The Chant starts with a peaceful weekend and soon turns to dread after a group chant opens The Gloom, a psychedelic dimension of terror that feeds off negative energy. Interact with a recurring cast of characters, untangle the island’s complex history, and witness terrifying revelations about the cosmos. While the theme of mental illness isn’t handled the greatest, and the performance isn’t amazing, there is a lot of fun to be had in this third-person action horror game where you need to learn how to balance your mind, body, and spirit.

Home Safety Hotline

An ode to analog horror, Home Saftey Hotline sees the player take on the role of an operator for the Hotline. As things unfold, you quickly learn that things aren’t as they seem. Read through a vast catalog of common pests and household hazards, and do your best to become an expert in home safety. You will be held responsible for what happens.

FAITH: The Unholy Trinity

Use your holy crucifix to perform exorcisms, fight back against possessed cultists, and cleanse haunted objects. Discover a world of dread, isolation, and mystery as you explore haunted forests, abandoned churches, and the inner sanctums of a Satanic cult. Take up as a young priest discovering demonology and cultism. Inspired by late 80s 8-bit gaming, FAITH is a surprise and a treat from front to back.

Killer Frequency

It’s a game I will shout about from the rooftops every time I get a chance. Take control of late-night DJ Forrest Nash as he runs the graveyard shift for 189.16 The Scream with Forrest Nash. Things quickly take a turn as a serial killer long thought gone has returned to the town. Forrest must act quickly to save the townfolk as they call in when they have a run-in with the killer. It is incredibly unique and intuitive, and I can’t wait to see what this team does next.

Jupiter Hell

Jupiter Hell is a roguelike set in a 90s-flavored sci-fi universe on the moons of Jupiter. The game pits a lone space marine against overwhelming demonic forces. Rip and tear zombies, demons, and unmentionable monstrosities, using classic weaponry such as shotguns, chainguns, railguns, and the trusty chainsaw. From an isometric view, there’s a lot of action happening at once in this Doom meets Roguelike. With a great heavy metal score and enough blood and viscera to make Doom proud, it’s worth checking out.

El Paso, Elsewhere

El Paso Elsewhere is a supernatural neo-noir third-person shooter. Hunt werewolves, fallen angels, and other damned creatures in a vivid slow-motion love letter to action classics. Fight your way through a reality-shifting motel, floor by bloody floor. Save the victims of Draculae, lord of the vampires. Destroy the villain you loved—even if it means dying yourself. If a killer soundtrack and blood-pumping gameplay are your thing, don’t pass up on El Paso, Elsewhere.

You Will Die Here Tonight

A love letter to survival and action-horror classics, You Will Die Here Tonight seamlessly blends top-down exploration with visceral, heart-stopping first-person arcade shooter combat. Resident Evil Gaiden finally gets its due. This is Spiral Bound Interactive’s first venture into gaming, and they have already proven they are a team to look out for.

Killer7

If weird horror/noir is your thing, look no further than Killer7. Dive into a dark world of underground assassins in a tale of revenge as Harman Smith, a man who manifests seven deadly personalities into the real world. Take control of this distinct murderers’ row as they hunt down the sinister Kun Lan to stop his plan of world dominance and end his organization of deadly suicide bombers known as “Heaven Smile”.

Mortal Sin

Stylistic action-horror roguelikes are front and center in Mortal Sins. While the story isn’t the focus here, it’s more the fast-paced gameplay. Procedurally generated levels, loot, and quests ensure no two runs are alike. Unlock special classes that provide unique playstyles, such as the spell-slinging Mage, dexterous Monk, or giant sword-wielding Berserker!

Forgive Me Father

Forgive Me Father is a dark retro horror FPS set in a comic book-style world inspired by the novels of H.P. Lovecraft. As the only one left with full senses, you begin a journey in search of answers and relief. How long can you last? Stylistic horror is rounding out our list. Explore this Lovecraft-inspired world that is full of hidden and hard-to-reach areas, and uncover the entire story to solve the mystery of this crazy place.
