Official Sororal One-Sheet Debut and Soundtrack Release Details

Following May screenings of their giallo-inspired feature Sororal at the Fantaspoa Film Festival in Porto Alegre, Brazil, the team at Nakatomi Pictures announce the release of the film’s soundtrack, marking the milestone with the unveiling of the official poster artwork.

In aspiring to produce Australia’s first neo-giallo thriller, writer-director Sam Barrett was aware from the outset that the score would be critical to successfully creating the surreal parallel universe in Sororal.

He put the challenge in front of composer Christopher de Groot.

“A lot has been said about the beautiful imagery in hallmark giallo films, but there is no over-estimating the importance of music in the genre. The best giallo scores can take you away to a strange dream world that is beautiful, erotic, and frightening, a world which Chris has definitely sculpted for Sororal,” says Barrett. “True, we used a dizzying array of references as a starting point, but I do believe that Chris’ work transcends the references in many ways. The music is the very heartbeat of Sororal, and the film would not exist without it.”

In writing the score, de Groot took inspiration from influences as diverse as prog-rock, kraut-rock, as well as Bulgarian choir music, 20th Century avant-garde classical works, and classic giallo scores from the likes of soundtrack band Goblin and legendary Italian film composer Ennio Morricone. The score’s distinctive sound was achieved with a 10-piece brass section, 16-piece choir, two drum kits, electric guitar, electric cello, and a barrage of analogue synthesizers. The unique result has clearly resonated with genre fans across the globe.

“The response has been amazing,” says de Groot. “People who haven’t even seen the film have been tracking me down on social media, asking how they can get their hands on the soundtrack. I’ve had enquires from Italy, France, Brazil, and the United States. Some people just go nuts over giallo.” Aaron Sterns, screenwriter of Wolf Creek 2, is among the fans of the soundtrack and labels it “haunting, eerie, and yet discordantly beautiful.”

In an exciting development, Swedish horror label Screamworks Records has added Sororal to its catalogue, the soundtrack being released on 8th July with cover art featuring the film’s exciting new poster art. The work of Melbourne graphic designer Matt O’Neill, the stunning portrait of lead character Cassie pays homage to the lurid illustrated genre film posters of the 1980s. A voracious student of horror, O’Neill has previously created authorised limited edition t-shirts and poster art for landmark Australian horror films such as Wolf Creek and Patrick along with original DVD artwork for cult favourites such as Maniac Cop and The Stuff.

In a busy week for de Groot, the composer will find out on 14th July if his score has secured a West Australian Screen Award (WASA). Sororal has been nominated for 2014 WASAs in the Score, Production Design, Sound Design, and Cinematography categories.

Sororal was written by Barrett and Robbie Studsor, directed by Barrett, shot and edited by Ivan Davidov, and produced by David Karsten. The key cast members are Amanda Woodhams, Liam Graham, Nicola Bartlett, Jeremy Levi, and Vito De Francesco.

Synopsis:
Cassie is tormented by visions of murder. Terrifying images flood her dreams and attack her waking hours. Her dreams are her curse and keep her isolated from the everyday world. Cassie’s life is thrown into disarray when a mysterious detective comes to her with a bombshell: He tells her that her visions are depictions of real murders, murders that she couldn’t possibly have seen. Cassie’s pain now has a face, and she must stop the killing at all costs. The twisted, childlike killer targets Cassie’s loved ones, and the race is on to stop her. Cassie is thrown together with her former lover as they scramble towards a shocking revelation that will change everything.
