When discussing influential British horror, The Wicker Man from 1973 is one film that is inevitably mentioned.  It’s with a heavy heart that we report its director, Robin Hardy, has died at the age of 86.

Per the BBC, a family friend confirmed that Hardy, born October 2, 1929, in Surrey, England, passed away yesterday, July 1st.  No cause of death was mentioned.

The Wicker Man, which stars the late Sir Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, tells the story of police sergeant Howie (Woodward), who is sent to search for a missing girl on the fictional secluded island of Summerisle and encounters several unusual residents conducting strange rituals there.

Hardy was able to complete The Wicker Tree, a sequel to The Wicker Man, in 2011 and directed only one other film, The Fantasist, from 1986.  Last year Hardy said he wanted to make a third Wicker Man film in Lee’s honor; however, sadly, it appears now that will never come to fruition.

Tributes are obviously pouring in for Hardy on social media so be sure to add your own.  We here at Dread Central send condolences to his friends and family members. Godspeed.
