GOONIES Sequel: Probably Never; GOONIES Reboot: Maybe

A few years ago, word swirling around the internet made it seem like a sequel to 1985’s The Goonies was in pre-production. Obviously, nothing ever materialized. So what are the chances we’ll ever get a sequel to the modern treasure-hunting thriller? According to star Sean Astin (who played Mikey, probably never. Here’s what the now-adult actor told our friends at Collider:
“I think we’ve probably passed the threshold for which all of us original cast members are right for doing a sequel.”
There is a silver lining; while there’s nothing currently in the works, Astin believes a Goonies reboot is still a possibility, and that’s something he’s willing to support–with conditions:
“If it’s not as good as the original Goonies, that’s fine, who cares?”
Of course, there’s no actual news to report at this time, so it’s all just conjecture. Still, there’s no denying that The Goonies left an indelible mark of those of us who came of age in the 1980s. A well-done reboot can introduce a new generation to the infamous One-Eyed Willie–and Sloth!
Synopsis:
An old-fashioned yarn about a band of adventurous kids who take on the might of a property developing company which plans to destroy their home to build a country club. When the children discover an old pirate map in the attic, they follow it into an underground cavern in search of lost treasure but come up against plenty of dangerous obstacles along the way.
The Goonies is directed by Richard Donner from a screenplay Chris Columbus wrote with Steven Speilberg; in addition to Astin, the film stars Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, and Corey Feldman.
